Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for Women with Sexual Desire, Pain and Trauma Disorders
MBCT for Women with Low Desire, Sexual Pain and/or Trauma
A Didactic & Experiential Workshop for Therapists
Within a single day workshop geared to psychotherapists, Dr. Brotto will start by reviewing the evidence for mindfulness in other (non-sexual) patient populations and discuss the evolution of MBCT (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy) and MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction). One of the most common presentations in treatment are women challenged by low desire. Dr. Brotto will share some data on the development of her program in which they tailored MBCT to a population of women with low desire. Dr. Brotto will then spend most of the time doing in-session practice with participants, guiding them through the same exercises they teach clients at UBC Sexual Health Laboratory in Vancouver, Canada. She’ll differentiate how certain practices are customized to a population of women with genital pain, while others are better for women with sexual abuse histories.
Inquiry is a key ingredient to MBCT. The 3 levels of the inquiry will be described, then participants will be led in an experiential practice to illustrate how an inquiry unfolds with a client. Useful techniques including body scans, sexual sensations awareness exercise, and a provoking pain exercise will be taught as well.
In addition to the exercises done in the workshop itself, participants will also receive Dr. Brotto’s treatment manuals and audio recordings so that they will be able to practice these skills afterwards. The workshop will be tailored for all types of therapists with some basic knowledge about mindfulness but they will not need to be experts in it, nor have used it already with their patients.
Dr. Lori Brotto is a Professor in the UBC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Executive Director of the Women's Health Research Institute, and a registered psychologist in Vancouver, Canada. She holds a Canada Research Chair in Women's Sexual Health (2016-2021).
She is the director of the UBC Sexual Health Laboratory where her research over the past decade has focused on developing and testing mindfulness-based interventions for women with sexual desire and arousal difficulties and women with chronic genital pain. Together with a multidisciplinary team of sexual health experts and meditation teachers, Dr Brotto has adapted mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, which had been found effective for depression, anxiety, and chronic pain, to these populations of women. Her work has led to the development of several treatment manuals, both for the facilitator as well as for the participant.
Dr Brotto is an Associate Editor for the Archives of Sexual Behavior, has over 100 peer-reviewed publications, has given 200 invited presentations, is the Sexual Health expert writer for the Globe and Mail, and is frequently featured in the media on topics related to sexuality. She was a member of the DSM-5 workgroup on Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders published in May 2013.
