Description:
What understanding do therapists need to have in their toolkit to help their clients who may have pain during sexual activity?
What kind of work do Pelvic Floor Physical Therapists do to assist clients with Genito Pelvic Pain/Penetrative Disorder, also referred to as Dyspareunia, Vulvodynia, Vestibulodynia, and Vaginismus?
How does working collaboratively help clients heal more quickly?
What issues brought up in individual psychotherapy, couples counseling or sex therapy help the interventions a Pelvic Floor PT might make with a particular client?
In this webinar targeted to general therapists, sex therapists, and pelvic floor physical therapists Sari Cooper and Amy Stein offer an overview of how a Physical Therapist and a Certified Sex Therapist collaborate on diagnoses, treatment planning and care of clients and/or couples who present with sexual pain.
There are many times that a therapist doesn’t realize that their client has been suffering silently for years during their penetrative sexual experiences. They may think it’s due to psychological reasons that can be addressed with psychotherapy or trauma-focused interventions. Although a client may have let their gynecologists or PCP know of the pain they may not have gone into great enough detail or emphasis for the doctor to probe further. Many times doctors themselves (including gynecologists) are not well-educated enough on these specific disorders in order to diagnose it properly.
At the same time, Pelvic Floor Physical Therapists may not have significant clinical information about their client’s history, their relationship(s) or their sexual script if they don’t discuss these issues with the client’s therapist. In this webinar, participants learn how the family of origin and/or couples system directly/indirectly impacts the physical symptoms the PT and therapist are treating.
In this first time cross-discipline webinar, Sari Cooper, AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and Director of Center for Love and Sex is excited to welcome Amy Stein, DPT, Director of Beyond Basics Physical Therapy, author of Heal Pelvic Pain and Vice President, International Pelvic Pain Society to discuss their unique assessment processes, diagnoses that may need to be considered, and elements of a case that should be shared with one another to create a fully-integrated systemic treatment. Using composite clinical case examples (to protect confidentiality), Cooper and Stein will present the way each professional assesses, diagnose and collaborate on the treatment of a case.
